If you are a pet owner, chances are you already know about the importance of preventative pet care. These are proactive steps that us humans can take in order to protect our precious pets from the many different parasites and infectious diseases that can affect them. Heartworms are arguably the most important parasite to keep your pet safe from. There are primarily two reasons for this. Firstly, it usually takes at least six months for symptoms of heartworm infection to begin to appear and when they do, they are mild and easily overlooked. Secondly, left untreated, heartworm infections are nearly always fatal. They primarily affect dogs, but it isn’t unheard of for cats to be infected.
Why it is important to protect your pet from heartworms
Unlike other internal parasites, heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos. This makes infections more likely in hot, humid locations and months, but cases of heartworm have been reported across the United States and so preventatives are recommended for all dogs and cats irrespective of the time of year or where you live.
Once heartworm larvae have been transmitted to your pet, they make their way through the bloodstream to the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. Here they mature and grow, reaching up to a foot in length. As they reproduce, their numbers grow, clogging the blood vessels and preventing blood from flowing through them. This causes organ damage, failure and then premature death.
Whilst there are numerous preventatives available that can keep your pet safe from heartworms, most rely on regular, monthly administration. Failure to give the next dose at the right time could leave your furbaby vulnerable – even if you are only just a day or two late. Fortunately, there is now a preventative solution for dogs that offers longer-term protection that many patients find much more convenient. It is known as ProHeart 12 and is only available through veterinary professionals.
We are delighted to be able to offer ProHeart 12 here at our animal hospital in Fishers, IN.
What is ProHeart 12?
ProHeart 12 is a new heartworm preventative for dogs that have recently gained approval from the FDA. Just as with ProHeart 6, this preventative is designed specifically to keep your pet protected from heartworms. However, while ProHeart 6 only provides protection for up to 6 months, the extended-release injectable suspension of ProHeart 12 can offer your dog comprehensive protection from heartworms for an entire year.
This simple injection is performed in the comfort of our offices. After placing your canine pal at ease, we will administer it in exactly the same way as a vaccine and your pet shouldn’t experience more discomfort than a momentary scratch as the needle goes in. Administration takes seconds and there is no downtime, you will be able to go home immediately afterward. Protection against heartworms begins the moment the injection is given and lasts for a continuous 12 months before ProHeart 12 or another preventative must be given again.
Although ProHeart 12 is primarily given with the intention of protecting dogs against heartworms, it also offers valuable protection against another type of parasitic worm that affects dogs – hookworms. However, it isn’t a preventative against tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and other varieties, meaning you will still need to keep up with your dog’s usual worming program.
If you are looking for a superior preventative against heartworms, look no further than ProHeart 12. To obtain more information, or to schedule an appointment to see if ProHeart 12 is suitable for your canine companion, please contact our animal hospital in Fishers, IN today.
